Towel weight shapes how a towel feels, how much it costs to wash and how long it stays in service. It is expressed in GSM. Tender documents ask for a number, and suppliers quote one, but very few explain what the number does once the towel is in a guest bathroom or a laundry trolley.
This guide explains what GSM measures, which weight range fits guest rooms, pool areas and spa, and how the choice changes your cost per wash. It is written for hotel managers and buyers who have to sign off a specification and want to understand what they are signing. What GSM actually means
GSM stands for grams per square metre. It is the weight of one square metre of the towelling fabric. A 500 GSM towel means the cloth weighs 500 grams per square metre, regardless of how large the finished towel is.
That last point matters more than people expect. GSM does not tell you the weight of the piece you are buying. To get the weight of a single towel, multiply the GSM by the surface area in square metres.
- Face cloth 30 x 30 cm = 0.09 m². At 500 GSM, about 45 g per piece.
- Hand towel 50 x 100 cm = 0.5 m². At 500 GSM, about 250 g per piece.
- Bath towel 70 x 140 cm = 0.98 m². At 500 GSM, about 490 g per piece.
- Bath sheet 100 x 150 cm = 1.5 m². At 500 GSM, about 750 g per piece.
So a 400 GSM bath sheet weighs more per piece than a 600 GSM hand towel. When you compare quotes, compare GSM and size together, never GSM alone.
Why weight is not the same as quality
A heavy towel is not automatically a good towel. Weight can be added with short, cheap fibres that shed and go flat after a few industrial washes. Cotton quality, yarn type and how the loops are woven matter as much as the number. A well-made 500 GSM towel in 100% cotton will usually outlast a poorly made 650 GSM one, and it will cost less to wash over its life.

GSM ranges and where they belong in a hotel
There is no single correct weight for a hotel. There is a correct weight for each place a towel is used. The table below gives the ranges commonly used in hotels and how each one behaves in practice.

Guest rooms
For most rooms, 500 to 550 GSM bath towels give guests the feel they expect without pushing your laundry bill up. Hand towels can sit at the same weight or slightly lower. Face cloths are small enough that the weight barely affects your costs, so there is no reason to go light on them.
Pool, beach and gym
Here you want the opposite of plush. Pool towels are used wet, washed constantly and often walk out of the property. A 350 to 450 GSM towel dries quickly, weighs less per wash and costs less to replace when it disappears. Many hotels use a different colour for pool towels so they are easy to separate at the laundry and easy to spot at reception.
Spa and wellness
Spa is where extra weight earns its place, because the towel is part of the treatment the guest is paying for. Bath sheets at 600 to 700 GSM, plus bathrobes, are what guests notice. What GSM does to your laundry cost
Commercial laundries usually charge by weight, and in-house laundries pay for weight in water, detergent, energy and machine time. Weight is therefore a recurring cost, not a one-off purchase decision.
Take 100 bath towels at 70 x 140 cm. At 500 GSM they weigh about 49 kg dry. At 650 GSM the same 100 towels weigh about 64 kg. That is 15 kg more in every single wash cycle, for the whole life of the towel. Over hundreds of cycles the difference is far larger than the price gap on the purchase order.
- Heavier towels absorb more water, so drying cycles run longer and use more energy.
- Heavier towels take more space per trolley and per shelf, which affects storage in small properties.
- You need the same number of sets in circulation either way, so the extra weight multiplies across your whole par stock.

GSM and how long a towel lasts
Towels do not usually fail because they wear through. They are taken out of service because they look tired: flat loops, whites gone grey, frayed hems. A denser towel has more fibre to lose before it looks flat, which is one reason mid-to-heavy weights tend to stay presentable longer than very light ones.
Construction matters just as much. Double-turned, well-stitched hems and a firm border are what survive repeated industrial washing at high temperature. Our textiles are chosen to take repeated industrial washing, and we cut and sew them in our own workshop, which is explained on our about us page.
How to write your towel specification
A usable specification does not take long to write. Work through this list and you will have something a manufacturer can quote against without guessing.
- List every place towels are used: rooms, pool, gym, spa, staff.
- Set a GSM range for each place, not one number for the whole hotel.
- Fix the sizes in centimetres for each item, including face cloths.
- State the composition you want. 100% cotton is the normal answer for hotel use.
- Decide on colour, and on a separate colour for pool if that helps your laundry.
- Say whether you want a woven or embroidered logo, and where it should sit.
- Count the pieces you need in circulation, not just the pieces on the beds today.
